Writing a Novel – First Draft Complete

Writing a Novel – First Draft Complete

I have completed the first draft of my novel. I actually typed THE END. It is a surreal feeling.

The desire to write a book has been ever present in my life. Like a shadow. Always there but never within grasp.

Now it is. The first draft of my first ever novel is complete. Since I have decided to become an independent author/publisher, I have been filled with a fever to get it done and get it published. Working on my novel every day for months. I’ve just realized that I haven’t actually taken a moment to revel in the fact that I have already completed a huge bucket list item. I have written a book. It’s not perfect or ready to print yet. But it is a real book. Full length with a plot, setting and characters. I did it.

I am going to take that moment right now. I am going to own this slice of accomplishment that I have wanted my entire life.

I have written a book!

I find most people do not take the time to recognize their own successes. To praise themselves on every aspect of their journey. Whether it be in their career, fitness, family goals or innumerable other important aspects of their lives. They see what other people are doing and they think they could never do that. I am here to tell you, that you CAN.

And while you are working towards your goals, stop along the way as I just have and be proud of how far you have come. You don’t need other people to encourage you every step of the way. Most people will not even see your every step, your every struggle. They normally only see the finished product. So make a habit of encouraging yourself, giving yourself a pat on the back or a fist pump in the air for every step you take, big or small. Be proud and then get back at it.

My first draft of my first book is finished. I have done a read through of the manuscript and added extra scenes, dialogue and descriptions. I’ve also deleted scenes which was painful but necessary. I still need to go through it again and add in the editing notes I’ve made for myself in my novel journal pictured above.

I have started my quest to find a professional developmental editor to help me make my story the best it can be. To make sure my vision of my book has come out of my imagination and onto the page correctly.

I am searching for my cover designer. Such a fun aspect. I cannot wait to see my book come to life with a cover.

Before I am ready for my editor, I have to make a brief outline of the other books in my series to make sure everything is in place in this first book. Writing a series starter is different than writing a stand alone book as you have to prepare for things you haven’t even imagined yet. But as ever, I love a good challenge.

Thank you for following along on my author journey. I will keep you updated as I progress. Like my Facebook page to see the latest news.

Let me know in the comments, what is something YOU are proud of? Which step toward your goals have you reached recently?
